波動拳 means wave motion fist. The designer who put it in an arcade cabinet took the idea from the Wave Motion Gun in Space Battleship Yamato, a 1974 anime about a warship rebuilt to fly to the edge of the galaxy.
So the fireball predates the fighter. It came from a cannon on the front of a spaceship, and it has been borrowed ever since — by games, by a British band, by everyone who has ever posed for the photo with their palms out. This is the next borrowing. It is a joke about a beam weapon, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any game publisher.
